The Acadian Cross in St. David commemerates the landing of the first Acadian settlers to the south shore of the St. John River in the Madawaska Territory in June, 1785. The Acadians, having been ejected from Acadia, in what is now Nova Scotia and the lower St. John in New Brunswick petitioned the Canadian Government and were eventually granted this land. Accounts of the landing say that upon landing, Joseph Daigle erected a cross at this site. Each year, in late June, the Acadian Festival in Madawaska celebrates the landing with numerous events and a family reunion of one of the original families. Near the cross are stones bearing plaques which are dedicated to early family members and commemorate the year of their family reunion. Family members come from around the world. During the festival a re-enactment of the landing is carried out by people in canoes, often wearing period dress. The festival this year (2009) runs from June 25th to 28th.
The cache was lost due to high flood waters. A new cache was places May 28 2008. The cache is now in a heavey duty plastic storage bottle with a screw cap lid covered in camo tape.
The new contents are:
Eeyore
Elephant
A Mega Marble
1 Swedish Krona
a Gummy Spider
A Steel Wire Puzzle
A Travel Bug -(The Dolphin)
There is a sign near the Tante Blanche museum in St. David for the Acadian Cross. Follow that road to the cache. It should be a quick find. Watch for muggles, especially during the festival.
