Coffer-dams (caissons) at Kulcs (GCKUKE on www.geocaching.hu).
My first cache is situated by the bank of the Danube. The view is tranquil, but it also offers a history lesson for those interested in technology. Attention, ideal spot for fishing.
After the 2nd WW no bridges were left in Bp. The first permanent new bridge was the Kossuth B opened in January, 1946. For building the legs of the bridge, caissons were used. Caissons were fixed in the riverbed by stones, the water was pumped out of them, and then the foundations of the bridge were built. Construction lasted only seven months, and this rapid work made the brige the symbol of reconstruction after the war. The bridge was designed to last for ten years, and was closed down in 1957 and demolished in 1960. Today one can find memorial stones where it stood on both sides of the river. The steel structure of the bridge was recycled, but the cesons used for the foundations were rafted down the Danube and used for building a dam at Kulcs.
The easiest way to find the location is to turn towards Kulcs from road 6 at N 47° 03,155' E 18° 54,096'. Then turn to minor road at N 47° 03,327' E 18° 54,628'. This road passes the the wind power station of Kulcs, then, at the end on the left there is the parking lot at N 47° 04,202' E 18° 53,952'. From here it only takes a short walk
to find the box.
