Second Annual LA/MS Katrina Survivors Event
An event to bring together the geocaching community along the Gulf
Coast in remembrance of the 2005 hurricane season.
This is the second year the LA/MS geocaching community has decided
to get together and remember the 2005 Hurricane Season and how we
were all affected. Last year's event was held at
Percy Quin State Park in Mississippi and was very fun and well
attended by people from all over the Gulf Coast. It should be a
time of reflection, but also of community and fun. This years event
will be at Lake Fausse
Pointe State Park near Lafayette, Louisiana. Please note that
there is a $1.00 per person day use fee to enter the park.
There are 16 cabins in the park as well as RV and tent sites. If
you wish to stay the weekend you should call
1-877-CAMP-N-LA(877-226-7652) or go to the park website. I have
been told these book quickly so I would recommend making
reservations early. Lafayette and New Iberia are several miles away
but both have many hotels as well.
We have reserved Pavilion #1 for Saturday from 7AM-8PM. All
activities will be conducted at this location. This covered
pavilion can seat 60 people, but I am sure there will be room
around the pavilion for chairs and private tables, etc. as there
was last year.
Directions from their website: To access the Levee Road from St.
Martinville, take LA 96 to LA 679, then to LA 3083. Turn right onto
Levee Road for 8 miles. There are two routes to Lake Fausse Pointe
SP from I-10: (1) take Exit 115 to Henderson, heading south on LA
352; the park will be about 19 miles down the road, on the right;
or (2) take Exit 121 to Butte LaRose, following LA 3177 to Butte
LaRose, then turning west into LA 193 (Herman Dubuis Road, then
south onto the levee road, LA 352. The park will be about 16 miles
down the road, on the right. Please note that on the second route
there is a pontoon bridge, just before the levee, that has a height
restriction of 9.5 feet. GPS Coordinates: N 30.06470; W
91.60758
---ACTIVITIES---
There are three active cache in the park and many, many more in the
surrounding areas. Locals will be trying to add more to the park
before the event. The park has great raised walking trails that
give you awesome views of the local ecosystem, flora, and fauna.
Lunch the day of the event will be pot luck, so if you are able
please bring a main course, side dish, or dessert. Plates, cups,
and plasticware will be provided. Please bring your own beverages
although some may be provided, water at the very least.
---PRIZE RAFFLE &
CHARITY---
Last year we held a raffle to give away some great prizes donated
by local, national, and even international organizations and
sponsors. This year we are looking to have even MORE sponsors and
prizes. (See an up to date list at the bottom of this page.) What
do you need to do to be entered in the raffle?
For every 5 (five) non-perishable or canned food goods you donate,
you will receive 1 (one) raffle ticket. Canned goods will be
donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. For every 5 (five)
dollars you donate, you will receive 1 (one) raffle ticket. Cash
will be donated to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA) and the MSSPCA.
Last year we raised $100 cash and collected over 500 canned goods,
but I believe we can easily triple that this year.
