Geocache Description:

WHAT IS A WATERSHED?

One of the easiest to understand definitions I found was on this websitevisit link. It says "A drop of rain runs off your roof, into your yard and joins other drops. They flow into a creek, then into a larger stream and finally into a river. People call the land area that collects all of these raindrops a watershed". A watershed includes the soil, air and water within it. Just remember, water flows downhill!

The coordinates will take you to an overlook where you get a beautiful view of Ft. Loudon Lake. I'll give you a little history of Ft. Loudon Lake and then you'll have to answer a couple of questions about this beautiful lake / river system.
Ft. Loudon Lake was created in 1943 with the creation of the Ft. Loudon Dam. Fort Loudoun provides 379 miles of shoreline and 14,600 acres of water surface. Fort Loudoun is named for the 18th century British fort built on a nearby site during the French and Indian War. The fort was named for John Campbell, the fourth Earl of Loudoun, commander of British forces in North America at the time. The dam was created for a couple of real important purposes. One was flood control and the other was electricity. The dam has 4 turbines that produce 155,600 kilowatts of electricity. (All infomation was taken from the TVA website).

To get credit for this Earthcache you must email me the answers to the following questions:

(1) Take a picture of yourself at the overlook with the lake in the background.

(2) The coordinates will lead you to a sign mounted in concrete. Face the sign and with your compass or GPS, take a bearing of 200 to 210 degrees. You will see another large body of water (a little hard to see in the Spring and Summer due to leaves but it's there, just have to look). What is the name of this lake/watershed that you see about 2 miles away?

(3) What 2 rivers converge east of Knoxville to create the Tennessee River / Ft. Loudoun Lake?

(4) Name the states that the Tennessee River flows through?

(5) Fill in the blanks; The Tennessee flows into the ________ River which in turn flows into the mighty __________ River and eventually ends up in the _______ of ___________.

This cache can't be done at night. You have to be able to see the other body of water and I need to see you and the lake in the picture. Please don't post your answers in your log.

Any "FOUND IT" log without your picture and without the correct answers emailed to me will be DELETED. Thanks and HAPPY CACHING!
