Cúchulainn's Castle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

medic143: I have decided to retire the original Cúchulainn's Castle cache and replace it with a slightly larger cache away from the site and hopefully muggling.

Geocache Description:

The approach to the site is over a stone stile and up an unpaved roadway.

The cache itself is a small plastic tub, covered in black tape. When placed it contained a log book, the sting TB, a couple of keyrings, a glasses string, some apache hand wipes and a FTF badge for (obviously) the first to find the cache.

The coordinates were averaged using a Garmin 60 CSX with 4 metre accuracy.

The official name for this site is Castletown Mount, although it has been known as “Pirate Byrnes Castle”, 'Dún Delga' and of course Cúchulainn's Castle.

It is believed that Cúchulainn used this place as a base for hes attacks on Queen Meave as she attached north into Cooley. In the Táin the site is referred to as Delga but it was not until the beginning of the 11th Century that sources refer to it as Dún Delga. This suggests that a ringfort like structure had been erected on the summit.

In 1910 investigations revealed a souterrain, a stone built cave. This is on the South side of the mound but it’s entrance has been blocked up. There is also a monolith standing in a field to the NE of the mound.
Around the end of the 12th Century a motte castle was erected on the site. Around the end of the 18th Century the curling driveway was added to provide access to the top of the mound. A local merchant Patrick Byrne, build a tower and ancillary buildings then, the ruins of which still stand.
