Short hike with a very brief uphill to a secluded spot on Horseshoe Pond in Sebago Lake State Park.
I found this spot while mountain biking at the Songo Locks end of Sebago Lake State Park. This is a secluded location not far from the road with a picnic table and view of Horseshoe Pond. At this spot, we have seen beavers, deer, turtles, and herons (and we've only been a couple of times!). The cache is located a little ways from the picnic table on the "Songo Wilderness Trail", which is part of an eight-mile trail system at the camping side of the park.
Parking can be found at the junction of State Park Road and Thompson Point Road. Look for a trail between the trees at the edge of the sandy parking area (Note: the parking area can be full during the summer - it is used for overflow parking for the camping area at the park). Follow the trail out, around, up, and over to the picnic spot and cache.
Cache started with our entire stock of recently found and launched travel bugs, along with a few other trinkets. The container is an olive drab french ambulance container. This is about half the size of a standard ammo can, so plan your trades accordingly.
Now that "The Songo Locks Cache" (GCGNP7) is back up and running as of 8/28/07, make sure to check out the locks and get another smiley in walking distance!
