Once in a Blue Moon - Cowles Mt. - Jim McCann Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

PQGeoTrekkers: I'm going to go ahead and archive this one as requested. I haven't had an opportunity to find another ammo can and climb back up here. Time for someone else to use this area. This had a good run and it was a good memorial for a well know local San Diego Triathlete. PQGT

Geocache Description:

In memory of Jim McCann, president of the Triathlon Club of San Diego.

The saying "Once in a Blue Moon" is a real condition. This is an occurance when there is a full moon twice in one month. And every time there is a blue moon, there is a line of people who climb to the top of Cowles Mt to watch the sun set and the full moon rise. That is what we did, Mrs Trekker and myself and a bunch of triathlon club people, on June 30, 2007.

UPDATE: 3/21/08 - I finally had a chance to bring up a real container. Changed this from a micro to a Regular. Look for an Ammo Box now within 10 feet of coordinates.

We went up with the Trathlon Club of San Diego (Mrs Trekker is a member). On June 20, 2007, the president of the club, Jim McCann, passed away from a stroke (cause unknown at this time). Jim had been a member of the club since 1988 and has been running things since 2000. He will be greatly missed. About 43 club members came up to the top of the mountain to pay their respects. Currently there are about 1,800 members in the club.

To those who knew McCann, the key to his impact was that he was more concerned about the beginner triathlete and growing the sport than the elite triathlete. “Jimmy never lost sight of who his constituency was,” said Bob Babbitt, co-publisher of Competitor Magazine. “His job, he felt, was to let everyone know, we want you. It didn't matter if you were overweight. It didn't matter if you were 90 or if you were 12. (He thought) 'This is an awesome sport. Come join us and have fun.' ”

I found a spot to hide a micro cache near the top of the mountain. It was all that I had in my backpack that evening. I was surprised there was no other cache up here (turns out there is one nearby that's not at the top but won't allow another cache at the top of the mountain). This one is hidden below the summit down the road that goes to the east. Look for a small trail on north side of the road. There is no need for any bushwhacking. It's an Altoids container painted black. Check the hint if you want a little help, it's hard enough to get up to the top. I don't want you getting too frustrated looking for a micro.

There is a log and a golf pencil in the cache. Sorry, no FTF prize as this was a spur of the moment cache. Initially, there is a geocoin.
