How did the Baraboo River get its name? I am not sure if anyone knows for sure, but I have found two popular legends. According to one legend, Baraboo is named after a French trader and trapper who bartered with the Indians near the mouth of a stream which today bears his name. Initially only the river was called Baraboo; the name later applied to the hills, the city, and the town. Another legend has is that the name Baraboo comes from an Indian word of very similar sound which meant “The river of many vines.” The source of this legend was published in the Baraboo Daily News on Monday, February 3, 1913. A copy of the article can be found on the Wisconsin Historical Society Website.

The cache is located close to the river. It is a regular camo-taped container with several trading items. Please hrehide well. Enjoy the river!!
