Geocache Description:

Located close to the summit of Mount Lady MacDonald

Are you up for a hike? We hid this cache on Canada Day close to the summit of Mount Lady MacDonald at approximately 7500 feet above sea level. The parking lot is at 4500 feet so it's about a 3000 foot/850 metre gain in elevation. The views of Canmore are worth the trek to the top and you should also expect to see wildflowers, mushrooms, wildlife and possibly a parachute or two as they jump off the mountain and sail back down to the town below. There are fossils all over the top of the mountain...since it used to be a lake millions of years ago so keep your eyes peeled for those as well.

The cache is an ammo container hidden close to the teahouse that was started near the top of the mountain years ago but was never finished. If you read the hike description in Gillean Dafferns K-Country trail guide (Hike 15) she actually describes the hut as being finished and gives the number you can call for reservations. Alan Kane's-Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies is a little more accurate about the current state of the teahouse. I have always felt that this mountain has three 'tops'. The first is the teahouse where the majority of people turn around. The second is an easy scramble to the mountain ridge where you get full 360 degree views (including Assiniboine). The third is a scarier scramble across a knife edge to get to the true summit and sign the log. I've only gone the whole way one time. Alan Kane's description is pretty thorough if you want to go the whole way.

The trail is well maintained and is easy to follow. It does spilt in two a few times but both paths always re-join further up the mountain. Keep an eye out for rock cairns to guide the way through sections of the hike. I have given child co-ordinates for parking. Start your hike along the edge of Cougar Creek to the trailhead sign and turn left into the forest. Make sure to use my child waypoint to get the right trail to start on since there is more than one trail that starts here. Don't go on Montaine, Traverse Trail!

It can be windy at the top and much cooler than at the start of the trail. Bring sunscreen, take care and happy hunting!!
