Geocache Description:

McNab's Island has been the site of numerous military operations over the years -- Forts' Ives & McNab and the Hugonin & Strawberry Batteries.

In addition to the military presence, McNab's has been home to various businesses and enterprises, among them Woolnough's Pleasure Grounds and later Findlay's Pleasurre Grounds (offering dancing, dining and carnival games, later to become the mainland's well known Bill Lynch Shows), a tea room, and a bottling plant.

The 1870's to 1890's were the golden era of recreation on McNab's Island. The island was routinely the site of weekend outings from Halifax and Dartmouth, hosting large picnics and parties (imagine the 1846 Mechanics Institue picnic of 6,000 people being ferried over and back). One enterpreneur who capitalized on the party spirit was A.J. Davis.

A.J. Davis, a Halifax meat packer, set up a distillery and bottling plant on the island to cater to the thirsty visitors. A.J. Davis Soda Pop Factory operated before and during US Prohibition, producing soda pop as well as a "special concoction" called "Pure McNab". Manufactured at the Findlay Farm site, the bottling plant ceased operations sometime between 1912 and 1915. Three factors contributing to its demise were: (1) the 1906 departure of the Imperial garrison from the island (2) the Temperance Act of 1910, which eliminated the sale of alcohol on Sunday and (3) the Anglican Synod in 1912 which successfully stopped ferry service on Sundays.

Cache is a cammoed micro container about 500 meters from Garrison Pier.
