Welcome to the Swamp
Well this location is steeped in History , dating back to 1862
when the first know service was held in the Wilderness Presbyterian
Church of Strathdownie. Services had been held as far back as 1851
at the Old Strathdownie Homestead. In 1862 the original church was
built near here and was then rebuilt in 1875 nearer to the present
Church site.
It wasnt till 1914 that the present Church was built and still
stands at its scenic location. This churh was the backbone of the
local community which included areas from Mount Gambier to
Casterton and Dartmoor and has seen many a change in its
Lifetime.
On Sunday the 8th April 1962 the Wilderness Church celebrated its
Centenery when more than 350 people came for a special service. To
mark the occasion a new fence and gateway were donated by the
McEachern family and they still stand today.
The Church is surrounded by the Church Swamp Wildlife Reserve which
is briming with a wide range of trees and animals..This is a
fantastic place to go for a walk and check out the unspoilt
landscape, there is a small track that can be followed.
You will be searching for a small cliptop container with logbook,
pen etc. We Hope you enjoy the area!!
