The region where this cache is placed was settled rather late for the eastern U. S. and the farms were never very prosperous due to a short growing season and infertile soil. In the early part of the 20th century, there were farms in this area as evidenced by house foundations, shallow well sites, and trash dumps. With the Great Depression of the 1930’s most of the original farms failed and New York State took over the area. A civilian Conservation Corps camp was set up here to give work to unemployed young men where they planted trees, built buildings and tore down old farm sites.
By the early 1940’s, the Corps was gone and this area became a New York State Forest. The stands of evergreen trees in straight rows are what remains of the CCC efforts.
