Geocache Description:

The cache is not located at the above listed coordinates. They take you approximately to the county line. You must first figure out the puzzle to Del Norte County to find the REAL coordinates. This is the next in my series of county line caches. Safe parking is available for this micro sized treasure.

Over the past few years now I have traveled throughout the State with a new perspective. Not like I used to… before I would fly through little burgs and towns without taking a second look. I have always traveled for work but never took the time to “see” where I was going. I would hit a town do my work and go back to the hotel and sit in my room clicking the clicker until the wee hours of the morning.

Now, every new town I pass through is an awakening. I thrive on the new treasures I see… monuments I have whizzed by a hundred times in my life are now new nuggets of knowledge, vista points I passed without a blink are postcard images burned in my mind, and side streets of towns are secret treasures that only non tourists find. Geocaching has made me stop and smell the roses.

Hopefully, this little puzzle will help enlighten you on the County of Del Norte and maybe make you “stop and smell the roses” too.

A = Del Norte County is a small section in the extreme northwestern corner of the State, which was set off from Klamath County (now extinct) March 2, 1858. The name literally signifies "to the north." Efforts were made in the Legislature to give it the names of Buchanan, Alta, Altissima and Rincon. James Buchanan was then President of the United States, but it was claimed that the plan was to give all the counties names of local significance. "Alta" means upper, and "altissima" uppermost. Oh, your answer for (A) = 0. I know… a gimmie!
B = The County seat for Del Norte is this city and the county's only incorporated city. Convert the first letter of the City’s name to its numerical counterpart for (B).
C = The Battery Point Lighthouse is one of the first lighthouses on the California coast and was first lit with oil lamps on December 10, 1856. It is registered as California State Historical Landmark “NO. (C)51 BATTERY POINT LIGHTHOUSE”.
Checksum for North = 12

D = This mountain is the highpoint for Del Norte County. Searching through records the best elevation I can get is 6411 feet most just say 6400+ feet. The summit is on the Del Norte side of the county line and sits above a pristine beautiful lake named Devils Punchbowl. Convert the first letter of the Mountains name to its numerical counterpart for (D).
E = The town of Fort Dick in Del Norte County has a zip code of 9553(E).
F = The Del Norte County Library District is the central facility for the library system that serves Del Norte County. It is located: 1(F)0 Price Mall, Crescent City, CA 95531-4395.
Checksum for West = 19

I would like to thank Arse&Hemi for being my sponsor in the area for this cache.

Fun Tidbit of Additional Information:
The name of the county signifies "the north" and the county derived its name from its geographical position in the extreme northwest corner of the state.

The earliest permanent settlement was documented in 1852, although several vessels, including the Paragon, Cameo, and the Laura Virginia had anchored in the roadstead in 1850.

As always, enjoy.
