Geocache Description:

Peaceful Fort

Fort Tejon is a beautiful and peaceful historic site. It was established in 1854 to protect the Native American tribes and the settlers in the area from surrounding warlike tribes, and also to head-off confrontations between the Indians and many gold seekers. The fort was in operation for ten years and closed in 1864. It was witness to amazing events, like the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake, magnitude 7.9. The Fort Tejon Historical Society has a wonderful website that will show you pictures, give a complete history, and tell you about current scheduled activities: (visit link) There is a $5 charge for adults to enter the fort. If you don’t have time for a visit, the parking lot is shady and the restrooms are just to the right as you cross the footbridge.

The cache is NOT on the FORT GROUNDS or in the PARKING LOT but just a short distance north. You are looking for a small cylinder Nalgene bottle that will hold a few small trade items. You will not have to go through any brush but it is always a good idea to be cautious about snakes and black widows!

Northbound Approach: Approximately 7.5 miles past Gorman you will see the Fort Tejon Exit #210. After taking the exit, keep to the left and continue north to the overpass. Now you will be crossing to the west side of I-5. Back to your journey north: Go east back across the overpass and keep to the right until you are back on northbound I-5. Southbound Approach: Just as you reach the top of the Grapevine, you will see the Fort Tejon Exit which will be a sharp right curve. Back to your journey south: Backtrack to where you got off and there will be short onramp to southbound I-5.

This location is normally quiet with little traffic, however, if you happen to be here on a day with fort activities such as the Civil War Reenactment, there will be many parked cars and people walking about. Check the activities listing on the Fort Tejon Historical Society website given above.
