Geocache Description:

This is an easy drive-up in the area of a former Anchorage drive-in.

Remember drive-in movies?? Some of you may be too young, but I'm sure others of you have some memories. I couldn't tell you the name of one movie I saw at a drive-in, but I remember that admission was cheap and you got to sit in the comfort of your own car with your date or family and a big tub of popcorn and not really care what the movie was about. You had to keep the window with the speaker hanging from it rolled up as high as possible to keep the mosquitoes out. Some always got in anyway.

This cache is named for the drive-in that opened in East Anchorage back in the mid-60's. I'm not sure when it closed, but the Sundowner, which was located next to the Fireweed Theaters, closed in 1980. From information I found on the internet, the Billiken was open year-round, but business was best in the winter, because it didn't get dark enough in the summer. Besides the speaker, patrons could rent a window heater for 50 cents.

I originally planned to make this a puzzle cache with questions about the former drive-ins in Anchorage, but I wasn't able to find enough information. I did find pictures of the Billiken Drive-in in Muldoon and the Sundowner, which was situated just north of the current Fireweed Theater. If any of you have more information about the Anchorage drive-ins, please share!

CONGRATS TO MALCORE ON THE BLEARY-EYED FTF! :)
