Overlooking Grand St. Modet Traditional Cache
Overlooking Grand St. Modet
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located on Boucault's Hill (locally pronounced
Bogay's Hill), west of the town of West Ste. Modeste. The cache is
easy to find once you are on site, but the walk has one challenging
section about halfway in.
Park at the local town hall and find the trailhead around back of
the building. Turn right immediately after crossing a small bridge
and head up the hill to the cache. Overall, this walk could take an
hour, depending on how many pictures you take! Cache is a
camoflaged tobacco jar. Some sections of the trail can be a little
wet depending on time of year and local weather, although light
hiking boots will be quite adequate.
As of the summer of 2010, there is now a completed boardwalk to the
top of this hill so the difficulty is quite a bit easier than when
I placed the cache!
West Ste. Modeste was given its name by Pierre Constantine in
memory of his ancestral home in Normandy, St. Modet, (a Nordic
saint). There are also remnants of an old French fort not far from
the town office as well. Nicholas Gaspard Boucault was involved in
this area and conceeded his rights to this area to Constantine in
or around 1735, and we believe the hill was named after Boucault.
