Geocache Description:

Sidley Townsite is named after Richard D. Sidley, territorial police and customs inspector who settled on this spot in 1889. A thriving little settlement grew up here along side the Great Northern railroad tracks. The proximity to the border wasn’t problem for early pioneers, and several businesses actually straddled the international border. These days, rest assured, if you cross the border, someone, somewhere, will know – and track you down for questioning.

To reach Sidley, travel east from Oroville through the Nine Mile Ranch along the route of the old Great Northern Railroad. As you drive through the hills, parts of the road follow the old rail line through rock cuts. Imagine the old trains, heavy with gold from the Poland China Mine, creeping down these grades. According to historical records, trains coming down this grade had to apply the brakes so heavily that people in Oroville could see their red glow at night.

We liked this spot because of the history, and because it’s such a novelty to be able to drive so close to the border. Oh, and the view is terrific! We went with an “Americana” theme for the original cache contents – all done tongue in cheek, of course.
