Anyone who has graduated from, or had a child graduate from, North Schuylkill High School in the past 20 years probably knows about “the rock”. As far as I can figure, the tradition started around 1986 (if you know otherwise-please email me) when a senior at the high school got the idea to paint a large rock up on the mountain with his graduating year. Ever since then, it has become tradition that a group of junior classmen take a trip up and re-paint it with their graduating year the week before graduation. I can remember back around 1992, when the seniors were not too happy with the juniors for painting it too early and a little painting war broke out! Since the rock can be seen from Route 61, it became a daily site of mine growing up. And to this day, as I revisit my hometown, I still continue to see the numbers change year after year.
The cache has been secreted somewhere in this area. There is a path that will lead you up. Stay to the left, there is no need to go under the electric towers. There is some mild growth along the path, with the exception of one area approx. 600 feet from the cache. It is pretty over grown and appears as if the path stops. If you take your time through it, you will see it does continue on the other side. Just be careful to look where you are walking so that you do not take a wrong step. Along the way, we did encounter two turkeys, a deer, a rabbit, and a red tailed hawk. There is an elevation change of 350 feet over the one mile hike. Retrieval of the cache does require a steep climb. So, wear proper shoes and please don’t attempt this at night and only if you are confident you can do it!
We do not recommend bushwhacking it in. Here are some start coords for your convenience. N 40 46.614, W 076 16.558. If you park along the road, use extreme caution as this is a very busy road.
