Geocache Description:

The cache is a large container placed on the grounds of the now closed Woods Creek Information Center

In the years following the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, the U.S. Forest Service worked frantically to improve the roads and facilities in around the area to handle the great influx of visitors. This information center was one such facility and was built at that time. It was open and manned for a few years but once the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway was completed and people could drive to the mountain from I-5, the amount of traffic in this area dropped. Due to operating money cutbacks, due largely to a drop in timber sales, the forest service was forced to downsize. This included cutting personnel positions, foregoing road repair and in some cases closing roads completely and letting them grow back to nature. Along with other cost cutting measures was the closing of the Woods Creek Information Center.

Parking is available for 1 or 2 vehicles at either end of the gated access road. Beware of stinging nettles in the gate areas but not at the cache site. Coords were almost impossible to get at the cache site due to very thick tree cover. Using your geosense should result in success. Please replace the cache carefully to not disturb the natural environment and HAVE FUN.
