Geocache Description:

Congratulations to duckm for FTF!!

There was an old cemetery on the west edge of La Porte, called the Old City Cemetery. It was closed for the most part in the 1870's, when both Pine Lake and Patton Cemetery had been established.

In a the Daily Herald newspaper dated March 23, 1893, a list of names were published of those buried in the Old City Cemetery. It offered relatives a chance to relocate their deceased loved ones to the cemetery of their choice. Those that weren't claimed were moved in 1893 and are now buried in a mass grave in the Pine Lake Cemetery.

This is where this cache will take you....to that site. This is a sad site for me....one that deserves rememberance of the pioneers of long ago. In the center of the area is a memorial marker to the nearly 500 unknown persons buried there. Take a moment and reflect....how might their lives have been? And wonder....could there be one of your distant relatives lying here as 'unknown'?

Be respectful of the area....ABSOLUTELY NO NIGHT CACHING! Room only for log, BYOP.
