Geocache Description:

The Lone Rock Coke Ovens
The Tennessee Coal and Iron Company in 1883 built 120 coke ovens at the Grundy Lakes. These were built to supply the area’s growing iron works. The company contracted with the state, and convicts worked the ovens until 1896. On August 13, 1892, Tracy City miners, who opposed the use of convict labor, burned the stockade and put the convicts on a train and sent them back to Nashville as had been done in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1891.
Coke Ovens
Beehive coke ovens were called that because they were built of firebrick in a beehive-like hemispherical shape, and then covered with earth to act as an insulation.

The beehive ovens were built in banks of ovens, called a battery, with a strong retaining wall in front and then covered with earth. The ovens were usually built into a hillside. The earth cover helped insulate the ovens so that they would retain the heat after firing to help fire the next batch or charge of coal.
