Geocache Description:

Did you know we have our own bit of Crater Lake in Wallowa County? This cache will show you where.

Mt. Mazama located in southern Oregon, exploded with 40 times more energy than Mt. St. Helens over 6600 years ago, spreading a layer of fine ash over 8 states and 3 Canadian provinces (although they weren't states or provinces then!)--from 6 inches deep to over 50 feet deep in an area covering over 50,000 square miles. What was left of the mountain is what we now call Crater Lake.

There are several deposits in this area, but this one is easy to get to. That fine white dirt isn't talcum powder, it is Mt. Mazama ash.

It is hard to be sneaky because there isn't much coverage, so watch for Muggles and other critters. Accessible by car and a very short uphill hike. There is a Sacajawea dollar for the first to find. Please be sure to push the middle of the lid on tightly so it seals. Enjoy your hunt!
