Geocache Description:

An easy find giving a different view of Carnarvon's One Mile Jetty.

THIS IS A MICRO, it is quite small.
BRING YOUR OWN WRITING IMPLEMENT!!!

This is the first cache I've placed, so I decided to start small.

Update 23 Feb 13
My thanks to very new cacher Gascoyne Girl who wrote "Replaced container. New Eclipse tin, painted grey to match surroundings".

This cache was her very first find, and I really appreciate her helping me out.

Update 28 Aug 20 AND 6 Jul 21
IMPORTANT - PLEASE TAKE N0TE:
IF YOU FIND A RUSTY TIN, KEEP LOOKING FOR THE NEW ONE!!!

The rusty one is obviously an even older tin than the one I found AND REPLACED WITH A BRAND NEW MINT TIN on 28 Aug 2020. Please remove the rusty one, and check you are looking at the correct power pole - I suspect someone may have moved the rusty one to the wrong pole years ago.

On 28 Aug 2020 I replaced the Eclipse mint tin with a new Eclipse mint tin with the magnets on the outside, with a new log book and a supply of Finders Cards, both contained in a very small zip-lock bag. The zip-lock bag makes removal from the tin quite easy, but PLEASE put the log book into the bag staple end outward, and put the bag into the tin opening end out.

Carnarvon's One Mile Jetty is the longest jetty in the North of Western Australia. The jetty was completed by 1897, the head of the jetty was added in 1904 and the jetty head was widened in 1912.

The jetty included a tramway which ran from the town all the way to the end of the jetty.

This is a view of the Coffee Pot tram trundling out to the end of the jetty.

There was also an animal race the length of the jetty allowing sheep to be driven from holding yards all the way into the holds of ships. Jetty loading operations ceased in 1966 and the jetty was in danger of being demolished around 1998 until community action saved it.

I chose the position of the cache because, having seen the jetty from both ends, I still couldn't fully appreciate the length of it. From near the cache you can see the full length of the jetty from the side.

If you continue past the cache, passing to the right of and then behind the fish processing facility, you will find another old jetty and a beach, both popular fishing spots, as well as being great spots from which to get a photo of the One Mile Jetty - the best time for a photo is mid-morning, before the sun swings around into the background. The track to the jetty is fine for 4WD, but if you are in a 2WD I recommend parking in the open area behind the fish processing facility.

This is NOT the One Mile Jetty, but is a very popular location for fishing, and is the spot from which the Coffee Pot tram was photographed.

Once you've found the cache and signed the log (You will need to supply your own writing stick), if you haven't already done so, please spend a little time at the Heritage Precinct near the jetty. The ride out on the Coffee Pot along the tramway is no longer operating, but there are interesting museums well worth a look. The Cafe/Restaurant gets top marks from us, we enjoyed our lunch there today (28 Aug 20).

Please be generous with your donations, all the restoration and maintenance work is done by a great body of volunteers without whom these facilities would disappear.

Ian&Sue - Team Pathfinder are the local maintainers for this cache.
