Geocache Description:

Come to this sweet litte piece of beach at the head of Resurrection Bay when the tide is not high; boots are recommended, but not absolutely necessary.

Before the 1964 earthquake, the road to the Seward Airport began at the present day Port Avenue and ran parallel to the beach, with stands of spruce trees along both sides. Airport Road continued to a small subdivision with about 8 homes. When the earth shook on Good Friday, March 27, at 5:31 PM, the entire area of Seward dropped six feet in elevation. Tsunamis tore out the subdivision; one family spent that night on their roof, riding on their house as waves pushed it through the trees in the dark. Another family in a station wagon was chased up the airport by a wave rolling boats and airplanes in its crest. The old Airport Road settled into the new tidal basin and very little of it can still be recognized (Topozone maps would have you believe the road still exists, but Terraserver shows the truth). The subdivision was abandoned, and Resurrecton River now runs through the property. The great long beach, with its camping spots in the old trees, is no more. Only about a 1/4 mile of sandy beach remains, backed by saw grass and strewn with driftwood.

This cache will take you out to that beach, provided you can make it through a short stretch of bog and mud. Park at the very end of the new Airport Road. Walk across the south end of the airplane tiedown area and follow the first gravel track straight towards the bay. The berm you will cross at the end of that track is the remains of the Old Airport Road grade. Muck your way around the west end of the pond; you might be able to make it in any shoes, but rubber boots will guarantee you stay dry. Check the pond for ducks, geese, cranes, and the occasional heron. Once in the saw grass you will be high and dry. This hide should be good fun in the winter as well.

Only small items will fit in the cache container. Enjoy the beach, take some photos, get back before the tide is high!
