This is one of the caches in our Lake Tahoe West Shore Peaks series. This one is atop Barker Peak, elev 8166'.
Barker Peak is a pretty easy peak to bag. It is an easy hike from the Tahoe Rim Trail parking area at Barker Pass. Cachers will be treated to panoramic sierra views, and the satisfaction of hitting an 8000+ foot peak.
Peak bagging cachers should be advised NOT to take the straightest route to this cache. The cache itself is only about 1/3 of a mile from the Rim Trail parking area- as the crow flies. Taking the most direct route increases the difficulty of this cache to 4.5 or 5 and is a potentially dangerous scramble over volcanic scree (and cliffs too).
The recommended route is to follow the Tahoe Rim Trail/Pacific Crest trail north and then make the summit from the north west side. It is an easy walk to the peak with a little scramble to the summit. Plan on 2-3 miles roundtrip, and beautiful the whole way.
The intent of this cache was to make it accessible year round, so that winter backcountry travelers would be able to get this cache as well. Ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile in! The cache location should be in a low avalanche risk location if approached from the northwest. Conditions can change, and backcountry winter safety rules apply!
The cache itself should be easy to find once you make the journey out here. It is hung about 6 feet off the ground so that it will be reachable in snow. The cache is not on the summit itself, but about 335' northwest of the summit. If you've come this far, you'd better hit the summit as well for the panoramic views.
Please make sure to hang the cache securely after logging your find, so that it won't fall off during winter storms. Also please try to make sure the geocache sticker is against the object it's hung on since it sticks out quite a bit. The cache is about 1 liter in size with room for smaller trading items.
