Geocache Description:

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre was built just for the outdoor drama of Cross and Sword, written by Paul Green. It was created in honor of St. Augustine’s 400th Anniversary. The reenactment was of the founding of St. Augustine and it premiered June 27, 1965. For the past three years, the Amphitheatre and it’s grounds have under gone a 3.5 million renovation. The Amphitheatre will now accommodate a maximum of 4,500, which is over double the original capacity, with covers to protect performers and spectators from rain. With it’s state of the art design and amenities, the new St. Augustine Amphitheatre will provide a unique venue for the arts in northeast Florida. Along with the renovations done to the main building, the surround grounds have also gotten a wonderful facelift. There are nature trails studded with new wooden bridges and a new fishing dock for the small pond on the grounds. Also, there are the remains of small man made coquina ponds, stairs, and a water wheel originally made long ago by the St. Augustine Garden Club. They once created and maintained a small Garden of Eden in this place and as you walk the trails you will see plants not unusually found in a natural woodland setting. One can now only imagine the ponds and waterfalls trickling and the many varieties of plants and flowers in bloom. The gates to the Amphitheatre are open 8 am – 5 pm M-F and 7 am – 1 pm on Saturday. Other hours vary, depending on events. You are looking for an ammo can hidden just off a trail, no bush whacking needed, so please re-hide appropriately, to keep safe from mugglers. There are also a lot of critters around, thus the name of the cache. So keep your eyes open and you may see one!!
