Geocache Description:

A second stroll along part of the Pathfinder Long-Distance Path

The Pathfinder Long-Distance Walk is a 46 mile circular walk around Pathfinder Airbases, commemorating the RAF Pathfinder Squadrons from World War 2. The Pathfinder Squadrons of the Royal Air Force were elite squadrons of RAF Bomber Command.

At the start of the war Bomber Command made many daylight raids but the losses incurred due to lack of escorting fighters when operating over Europe led them to switch the majority of their bombing missions to night time. This reduced losses, but made identifying and then hitting the target accurately very difficult. To reduce this problem Pathfinder squadrons were created. The Pathfinders were to locate and mark the target with flares which the following main bomber could then home in on.

The Force was initially formed in August 1942 by creaming the best airmen from the existing Bomber Command Groups to make up the Pathfinder Force (PFF). Recruits were given a two-week course in marking techniques at RAF Warboys before posting to a Squadron.

This is a gentle walk on a marked footpath across fields. At anytime of year it could be muddy underfoot if there has been recent rain and it is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. When I placed the cache there were fields of corn and other crops and also fields of red onions and peas. You can use the villages of either Warboys or Pidley as your start point. Perhaps you could let me know which route you take in your log entry? If you start at Pidley you can continue to the village of Warboys for refreshments. If you start at Warboys you can get refreshments at Pidley Golf Course.

Don’t forget Scouse Mouse’s excellent nearby cache “Can’t see the Wood for the Trees” (GC12JXP)
