The ballads tell us that the Merry Men were grumpy. Perhaps it was because Robin was spending too much time with Marian. In any event, Alan-a-Dale went out of Sherwood Forest to take a break and learn a new song or two. Of course he was soon captured by the Sheriff's deputies.
Fortunately, Robin knew what to do. He learned that there was an archery contest in the village and entered it in disguise, under the name of "Barney." He dazzled all the professional archers. While everyone was focused upon him, Little John and the rest of the Merry Men went to the other side of town and found that Alan had been left unguarded during the tournament. They quickly made their escape.
Robin signed a few autographs and headed back to Sherwood Forest, but found a spot just on the edge of some woods -- not too far from a trail. He thought it was a perfect place to wait for the next rich person to come that way. After that, the tale is silent, but the Bard who told me this swore it is all true.
Imagine my surprise when we took a break from watching Raymond Van Barneveld at the Las Vegas Desert Classic and attended a 7-7-07 geocaching event at the 777 pub. It turned out that we won an ammo can filled with items. Through a strange configuration of time and space, I was able to learn about the 777th escapade and tracked Robin's steps from the Sherwood Forest Fire Road, just to the edge of some trees.
It seemed a good spot for this container. You will not have to go the woods to find it. Just make sure that it is securely placed when you leave it.
