Turn left in Falstone village at the tearoom parking near the village hall and it’s just a short walk south along the riverside, the path is level but narrow in places.
Falstone Stell was created by artist Colin Wilbourn in 2006 as part of Kielder Partnerships acclaimed Art and Architecture programme - working with local people and inspired by the area’s rich natural and cultural history. The dam which dominates the skyline holds back Kielder Water reservoir – a sight to see!
Imagine you are walking along a riverside path and in the distance you see what appears to be an ordinary sheepfold. However, this structure seems slightly out of place, and when you arrive you find this is not a sheepfold at all, but a sheltered space to sit and rest, where the walls form the backs and arms of sofas, cushions have been carved from stone to sit on, and there is a steel carpet on the floor with a history and record of the lost villages now submerged beneath Kielder Water. Steel throws over the backs of the seats with designs cut into them encourage the visitor to reflect on the community of Falstone and the constantly changing landscape that surrounds it. There is much more to discover at the Stell than listed here and the detail is intruiging. An extremely tranquil and lovely place to sit by the river and peacefully reflect.
Falstone offers a number of scenic walks and a great welcome at the Old School Tea Rooms and the Blackcock Inn. At one time pupils would ride in from the outlying farms to the old Victorian schoolhouse, now the tearooms, and left their horses at the stables - now the kitchen!
