K9 Walkabout Multi-Cache

geos of the jungle: Otis and I went out to GBF this morning and found both stages 1 and 2 are gone. We were happy to find that stage 3 and the final were still in place, so we picked them up and brought them home. It's sad to have to archive this one but we have no intention of supplying the thief with fake rocks for their collection. We will resurrect the K9 Walkabout concept somewhere else in the future. In the meantime, we have enabled all of the waypoints of this cache for viewing so if you'd like to take a virtual tour of K9 Walkabout just park at the ice cream parking area and follow the stages to the final area. You won't get a geocaching.com smiley, but you and/or your K9 will be grinning ear-to-ear when you're done (especially if you're greeted by the hounds).

Geocache Description:


About the cache: A 4-stage dog-themed multi-cache at Great Brook Farm State Park (aka GBF). Total hike distance will vary depending on how you approach it. If you hike the entire cache from the suggested parking it'll be approximately 4 miles round trip.

We recommend you bring a trail map along on the hike. There are trail maps available at the pavilion just north of the suggest parking coordinates. Or you can obtain a copy of the trail map here.

The coordinates above are for stage 1. There you will find information that will help you locate the next stage, and so on until you locate the final. Each stage includes an encrypted hint for the next stage so remember to bring along your secret rot-13 decoder. We encourage you to use the hints especially at stage 3 where the GPS reception is very poor. The difficulty "2" rating is based on the assumption that you will be using the hints.

All stages, including the final, are within 5' feet of the trail. No bushwhacking required. The three intermediate waypoints are all in plain sight (when viewed from the appropriate angle). There is no need to move any objects to retrieve them. Please be aware of this when searching, and please make note of the hide style/location so you can return the container exactly as you found it. Also, please exercise stealth (especially in the area of Stage 2) as GBF can be quite popular at times.

The final is a 30cal ammo can. We've seeded it with dog-themed trading items and hope that you will stick to this theme when considering your trades (with the exception of TBs and geocoins of course). The final also includes several theme-appropriate First Finders' Prizes. In addition to the FFPs, we're awarding unactivated Geo-Dog coins to the first three finders who post a picture of their dog(s) with the final container.

UPDATE (4/16/08): We added a cache-cam to the container. We're encouraging finders to snap a photo while at the final. We'll post the pictures here on the cache page when the film is full.

There have been several references to the hounds encountered during the hike. This is not a total coincidence as we were hoping this would add a little bonus to the K9 Walkabout. If you're interested, you can learn more about these hounds here.

UPDATE (12/22/2008): Great Brook Farm State Park's Winter Use Policy: When adequate snow cover exists between December 1 and March 20, the groomed ski trails (which are east of Lowell St.) are open only to paid skiers. Tickets for the groomed trails can be purchased at the ski touring center at 1018 Lowell St. Additional info can be found at the GBF Ski Touring website.
