Geocache Description:

This earthcache is on the island Andros, in Greece. It is first earthcache in Greece and first geocache on Andros. The basic coordinates will take you in front of cave Foros (in English guidebooks it is sometimes spelled as Phoros), which is speleothomic.

The basic coordinates will take you in front of cave Foros (in English guidebooks it is sometimes like Phoros), which is speleothomic.
Ideal parking place coordinates are in waypoint, I´ve post, from this place is 400m long way to the cave.
On the way are not any arrows to cache, but you can follow the electric cable, which ends in the cave.
In few days I´ll post video instruction too.

On the rail of the cave´s entry are informations about cave, with my friends, who speak Greek I will translate and post here very soon (or somebody from Greece can help me [;-)]).
I think, that you can somewhere borrow the key of the rail´s padlock and explore it, but I wasn´t in.
Here is the entry paper (in Greek)

What can you find in a cave (most frequent)?
in the titles are links to more informations about any object on the wikipedia

Speleothems

Soda straw
This is a primary karst effect; it is the first stage of stalactite and it rises by condensing carbon dioxide.
They grow in places where water leaches slowly through cracks in rock, such as on the roofs of caves. A soda straw can turn into a stalactite if the hole at the bottom is blocked, or if the water begins flowing on the outside surface of the tube..
Stalactite

Stalactites are formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate and other minerals, which is precipitated from mineralized water solutions. The same water drops that fall from the end of a stalactite deposit more calcite on the floor alow.

Stalagmite
The stalagmites (in difference of other objects) rises only from the floor, and unlike stalactites, stalagmites never start out as hollow "soda straws."
When touring caves with stalactites and stalagmites you might be requested to not touch the rock formations. This is generally because the formation is considered to still be growing and forming.
Stalagmites can also form in lava tubes, although the mechanism of formation is much different.

Column
Columns are formed by the unions of stalagmites and stalactites, there is many chemistry in it.
Stalactite and stalagmite must have enough water to connect.
It could also rise, if stalactite grow enough to touch the bottom, or stalagmite to touch the roof.
For color of the column (for stalagmites and stalactites too) is important minerals ingrediants in the calcite.
If is here a lot of iron, the final color is on the spectra yellow - pink - red; mangan is grey - bluegray - black.
The clean stalactite contains only calcium carbonate - Calcite.
RISE ANIMATION

Sinter
Sinter is high porouse whity rock, which incept with condensing of calcium carbonate from solutions, which contains melted calcite.
It rises on ceilings, walls and bottoms of caves in the course of water vaporization.
From sinters are all of objects, which are here described.

Cave pearls
It´s a secondary karst effect, which is only in karst caves.
It can be free on the bottom, or grow on it. It could also rise from fragments of speleothems, which fell into the water and were grinded off.
They are rounded or boled.

Your task
Your basic task is to take a photo, which is similar to the example photo on the left (the place is on the basic coordinates), you can also post other photos from the cave, if you have opportunity to explore it.
You also have to send me some information by e-mail .
  1. Length of the longest soda straw ever
  2. How many stairs you can see from the rail
  3. Height and width of the rail
Do not write answers to this questions to your log! I will also delete very short logs ("easy find, TFTC"), my work on this listing (no, you can´t find any box at the coordinates) wasn´t short and I want to read something.
I will evaluate people who post some useful (for listing) information in their log.
In the background of the example photo is town called Messaria with interesting Byzantine church
