Geocache Description:


Welcome to the 19th cache by "Keeper of Time", the 1st of a 2 part series.

In 1855 Edward Hill struck gold near to what is now the township of Blackwood, by the end of that year 13,000 prospectors were working the creeks and hillsides of the surrounding area. Blackwood now has a far smaller population but still retains its old world charm, extensive mining history and now a geocache.

At the above posted co-ordinates you will be standing in front of a relic of the areas mining history, an item used by the Cann family in both the nearby Rip Van Winkle and Easter Monday mines.

WP2 is at S 37 28.(A+C)(F+C)(D-A+C) E 144 18.(C+A)(F-C)E

At WP2 you should be standing at the final resting place of Matthew Rodgers, a stonemason and goldminer who built a cottage near by and called it St Erth (now the Garden of St Erth which you will see more of in the 2nd part of this series) after his birthplace in Cornwall.

To be able to complete part 2 of this series (GC14ARJ) you will need to know how many times Matthew Rogers went round the sun while he was alive.

For those who like to look around this type of area try looking for Bridget Cruise who built the Blackwood Hotel in 1868 and Madame Bonford who was contracted to cut the extensive water races which brought water to the gold prospectors. Also note the graves of Chinese miners which are tellingly located at the rear of the burial ground.
