The cache contains only a
logbook.
On Nov 19/07, this mile marker was stolen
by a local chap who decided he wanted it for some kind of private
collection of old and interesting things, or at least that is why I
assume he stole it. Fortunately for the existence of the mile
marker and this cache, the folks across the street, who have lived
near this mile marker most of their lives, and consider it their
own, observed the criminal act. They obtained the name of one of
the persons involved and informed an official at the District of
Chilliwack. Although the Official had been in contact with the
thief, the marker was not being returned. On Jan 9/08 I found out
the name of this person and phoned and suggested he had 4 days to
return the marker. Well the marker was returned on the 3rd day and
is now where it will hopefully remain. This marker would be in the
possession of a criminal were it not for the folks in the small
white house across the street from the cache, so give a wave, they
will be watching you and "Their Mile Marker".
Recognition must be given to gearhead for
identifying and marking the only other known remaining Mile
Markers, which tweaked my interest in searching for
others.
These cement markers, at one point where
painted a bright yellow, they indicated mile after mile of Fraser
Highway, reminding people how far they had come, and warning them
how far they had to go. But time and development soon took over,
and the cement mile markers were lost - their purpose no longer
useful. Those that still stand are now gray in color, their paint
faded, some taken over by bush, or sunken into ditches. The markers
were originally put in place when the highway was built in 1931.
Mile zero was the main post office in Vancouver. The measurements
ran east, along Kingsway and eventually crossed the Fraser
River.
As other geocachers are aware, several of
these makers have been found and marked by gearhead in his series
on mile markers. The text above, taken from gearheads cache page
indicates the markers were on the Fraser Highway, however they
obviously went beyond the Fraser Highway. I thought there still
must be some left beyond the ones he had found, and sure enough I
have located this marker which is 25 miles east of the last known
easterly marker. I have searched extensively and have not found any
to compliment this one, but felt it was also necessary to identify,
if only to the geocaching public, and of course to provide another
geocache for others to hunt.
As with all caches located near roadways
please be careful when parking to seek this cache, and park well
off the road.
