The Hilton Wetlands Plan
This is a joint venture between the Wildlife Society and Mondi Forests and the intention is to reclaim this degraded wetland.
Past owners drained the system by means of a ditch. The area was also invaded with exotic tree species such as eucalypts and wattle. Several species of weeds were also a major problem.
The first step was to control the weeds. This was done by Mondi and teams of members and wellwishers taking on allocated areas, and spot-spraying with approved herbicides. This is an ongoing project but is becoming easier each year.
The second step was to bury the heaps of rubbish that were found along the old main road. This was done with material removed from the N3 above Queen Elizabeth Park when the road was widened. There was concern that nothing would grow on the poor subsoil used, but hydroseeding soon turned it into a verdant mat.
Attempts are currently being made to reverse the drainage of the wetland by means of gabion weirs. These will provide more permanent water which will allow frogs to breed, and wetland vegetation to develop – affording certain bird species nesting sites.
