Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a cemetery away from the graves.

This church and cemetery are located close to where I grew up. It is a beautiful old church, but I have not found much history on it. We did find the marker for Merriman Straughn and his wife Hannah Vickery Straughn. They were innkeepers and the town of Straughn was named after them in 1868. Mr. Straughn was a veteran of the War of 1812, but I have not been able to find any information on where he served or in what division.

For those of you who have never heard the word "Straughn" before, it is an English word that means "valley of the foal."

The cache is a small, waterproof swim cannister wrapped in camo tape about 4 inches long. Please make sure to tighten the lid on the container after you sign the log. You will need to bring a pen or pencil.

Please observe daylight hours only.
