Geocache Description:

Allenberg Bog is also known to some as Waterman's Swamp and is a unique and fascinating refuge of 390 acres owned by the Buffalo Audubon Society. It is the jewel of the Buffalo Audubon Preserve System. Even before the first parcels joined Audubon's preserve holdings in 1957, the area was famous among botanists for its wild orchids, more than 30 species of liverworts, nearly 60 species of mosses, and approximately 258 species of vascular plants. It should be noted that any collecting of any plants in this or any of the Buffalo Audubon Society refuges is strictly prohibited. Please respect the purposes behind "Preserves."

The unique vegetation and flora includes dense thickets of rhododendrons, numerous species of wildflowers, ferns, huge hemlocks, pines, black cherry, black spruce, and tamarack stands. The preserve has two sphagnum bogs surrounded by tall trees, fragrant blossoming wildflowers, deciduous shrubs, clumps of ferns, and shoulder high bracken. Allenberg Bog Preserve represents one of the finest undisturbed areas in southwestern New York State.

Many rumors about the bog have evolved over the years among the locals including a variety of tales concerning missing people and monsters. The cache is loaded with swamp monsters. Please keep with the theme when trading.

This cache was placed with permission from the Buffalo Audubon Society. Contact Senior Naturalist Paul Fehringer for more information. All caches on BAS property must be aproved by the above mentioned individual. Visit www.buffaloaudubon.org to learn more about the BAS.

So now onto the cache...

Begin your journey at the listed parking coords. DO NOT ENTER FROM ANY OTHER LOCATION! THE PRESERVE IS SURROUNDED BY PRIVATE PROPERTY! Walk (DO NOT DRIVE) down the driveway. This is private property for which the BAS has obtained a right-of-way permission to use. Walk along the edge of the field until you get to the listed coords. At the listed coords is a mailbox. Why is there a mailbox in the middle of the woods? Look inside and sign the guest book if you wish. This is the visitors log, NOT THE CACHE LOG! From here, follow the trail into the woods. The trails are blazed with both metal BAS trail markers.

Watch the trail markers closely as the trail turns at a sharp right from the large trail after a bit. There should be logs across the road at this point, but the locals like to remove these so that they can illegally use their atv's on the main trail/road. Watch the trail markers carefully If you go straight you will be entering private property. Keep an eye out for the trail blazes. Continue on this trail as it winds through the forest. When you approach a tree with two trail markers pointing left and two pointing right, TURN RIGHT. (see picture)

Follow this trail until you get to a tree with four trail markers pointing into each other and a silver trail marker underneath that should be labeled "end of trail" (see picture) This is the end of the trail and you should see the bog to your left. The cache is located due south approximately 30 feet from the tree with the trail markers on it.

There is a stamp and a stamp pad in the cache along with a log for you to sign or stamp with your stamp. Enjoy this beautiful preserve. There is NO night caching allowed!
