Geocache Description:

An easy cache with a view of the former Nabisco Shredded Wheat Bakery.

Now just an unmarked and empty building , the facility at Tenth St. and Buffalo Ave. was once a bustling bakery employing hundreds and producing a wide variety of healthy products. Indeed, Shredded Wheat became synonymous with Niagara Falls and the image of the Falls graced the boxes of the Shredded Wheat Biscuits.
Shredded Wheat had it's beginnings in 1895 thanks to the "delicate stomach" of Henry D. Perky. Perky found that cooked wheat was easy to digest and he invented shredded wheat and the process to make it while living in Colorado. After several stops along the way, he came to Niagara Falls in 1900 and formed the Natural Food Co. which soon became the Shredded Wheat Co.
The factory that Perky built was as much and innovation as his cereal. Considered a "Palace of Light", the facility, located on Buffalo Ave between Fourth and Sixth sts. boasted 822 windows, air conditioning, thermostatic heat, an auditorium for a thousand people, dining halls, and even a library. For many years the "Home of Shredded Wheat" attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year. In it's later years the building became the original home of the Niagara County Community College.
The facility at Tenth St. and Buffalo Ave. was originally constructed as a warehouse and grain storage for the first factory in 1914. By 1918,production had begun here and by the 1990's many varieties of cereal ( Big Biscuit, Spoon Sized, Frosted ) and Triscuit crackers were being made.
The cache is a small camoed container, containing only a logbook so bring your own writing implement. While in the area, be sure to visit the Porter House (GCVZ0J) and Robert Moses Micro #1.9v3 (GCJG4K).
