This is on a slight incline, but all paved area. HOWEVER, Please park in the park next to cache site. Elmwood Park- using the walking bridge to walk to the site. There are two signs that will give you the information that you need! I prefer that you have your picture with the one so that the bay is behind you but I won't get too picky.
UPDATE: I have been told the sign at the coordinates is missing. However, there is another sign in the general area that can assist you in the answers. I will update coordinates to that sign in the upcoming month.
A watershed is another word for a basin. A watershed is a region of land where water drains downhill into a specified body of water, such as a river, lake, sea, ocean or wetland. A watershed includes both the waterway and the land that drains to it. Each watershed is separated topographically by a ridge, hill or mountain. A watershed is like a funnel - collecting all the water within the drainage area and channeling it into a waterway. When it rains or snow melts, there are many paths the water can take. It can soak into the soil and become groundwater, or enter a storm drain which then flows to a stream, lake, river or, in our case, the Grand Traverse Bay.
Grand Traverse Bay is a nearly pristine bay of Lake Michigan located on the northwest coast of Michigan's lower peninsula. The Bay's watershed encompasses 973 square miles and covers major portions of 4 counties: Grand Traverse, Antrim, Leelanau, and Kalkaska. Minor portions of the watershed are found in Charlevoix and Otsego counties.
The Grand Traverse Bay Watershed consists of the following major drainage basins:
Elk River Chain of Lakes
Boardman River
Mitchell Creek
Acme Creek
Ptobego Creek
Yuba Creek
East Bay shoreline
West Bay shoreline
Old Mission Peninsula
Everyday habits of the residents and visitors have a impact on the bay.
1. To log this cache you must go to the listed coords and have your picture taken with your GPS in hand post your picture with your log.
2. Read the sign. I need you to email me three things that you can do to help insure the safety of the water that we use.
3. Using the information on the sign, calculate how many square miles the water shed covers?
4. Look around. What type of topographic features make this area a prime drainage area. Looking east is a special type of land mass. Why is it important for people living on this land mass to know the geologic features of the area?
Unless you would like confirmation of a job well done and specifically ask for a confirmation email, if you are right you won't hear from me. If you are wrong...well..I will let you know!
