Geocache Description:

[FIN] Kätkö on filmipurkkia hieman pienempi mikro Porolahden kanavan varrella.

[ENG] The cache is a micro-sized container hidden beside Porolahti canal.

[FIN] Porolahden kanava, toiselta nimeltään Tammisalon kanava, erottaa Tammisalon mantereesta. Kanavalla on historiallistakin merkitystä, nimittäin Isonvihan aikana vuonna 1713 se toimi venäläislaivaston hyökkäysreittinä. Tämä väylä kuitenkin täytettiin Herttoniemen kartanon omistaja vara-amiraali Carl O. Cronstedtin käskystä vuonna 1794, kun se oli jo madaltunut purjehduskelvottomaksi.

Kanava kaivettiin auki ja kunnostettiin vuonna 2001. Nykyään sitä reunustavat lenkkeilijöiden ja pyöräilijöiden suosimat hiekkatiet. Kätköpaikan läheisyydessä joutsenet, sinisorsat ja muut kaupunkilinnut ovat tuttu näky, suurelta osin ruokinnan ansiosta.

[ENG] Porolahti canal (also known as Tammisalo canal) separates Tammisalo island from the mainland. The canal has had a noticeable role in the history -- Russian battle ships sailed through it on their way to Helsinki during Greater Wrath in 1713. The canal was filled up in 1794 and later reconstructed in 2001.

Nowadays the many paths along the canal are popular jogging routes. Swans, mallards and other birds are not a rare sight near the cache area.
