Geocache Description:

This offset multi-cache consists of several easy to moderate hikes (<=1 mile each way) and short drives that will let you rediscover little-known monuments of generations past. Over the course of an afternoon, you will explore the area around Lake Thurmond Dam and gather the genealogical information necessary to locate and access the final cache.

All stages, including the final cache, are located on public land bordering Lake Thurmond and the Dam. Stages 1-3 are small containers, where you will find partial coordinates for the next stage, clues to decode the coordinates, and a list of reference locations (6 total) where you can rediscover the past and glean the information necessary to solve the codes. The final stage is a medium-sized container, with a twist. Please replace each stage as you found it (or better) and sign the log for a smiley.

At each of the reference locations you should take some time to look around; additional information may be nearby. Bring a pen and paper (or, even better, a camera) so that you can document all that you see or you might be disappointed when you reach the final stage. The information you seek is in plain sight, so it is not necessary to move, excavate, or otherwise disturb anything that you find. Please do not post pictures that might give away clue information or spoil the experience for future explorers. Most importantly, be respectful of the history and leave no trace of your visit.

The trails are overgrown forest roads or animal paths and some bushwhacking may be required. My 5 year-old (who eats nails) helped setup this cache and has hiked through all the stages several times, so the terrain is not too hard. Stage-specific coordinates will bring you very close to a container and reference coordinates will put you within a stone's throw of the past. You may notice some shortcuts, but most are not recommended because they require trespassing on private property or use of a machete to get through the undergrowth. Additional coordinates are provided for locations where parking is tricky.

***Lastly, some stages require hiking through designated hunting areas. Although much of your journey in these areas will be along forest roads, you should be aware of the hunting seasons (best to go midday during hunting season), dress appropriately (i.e., wear orange blaze), and use common sense.***
