The Birdman's Home Cache is located at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. You can park at the Monks Mounds parking lot. Quick find for geocachers passing through the area on vacation. The container is a 4" x 8" plastic container. The terrain is a flat and a mowed lawn. There is a trail part of the way to the cache. Bug spray is suggested. This geocache is placed on Historic Preservation Agency managed property with permission. Do not place the following items in the Geocache: food items, inappropriate, offensive, or hazardous materials. It is the visitors responsibility to orient themselves with policies and rules pertaining to this Agency managed site. The site preserves a prehistoric Indian city that flourished from 800 - 1450 A.D. The leader's home was on top of a flat-top mound, which today is called Monks Mound. Monks Mound is 100 feet high and covers 14 acres. It is believed that hawks were messengers to the leaders from the Great Spirit. The hawk was portrayed in the people's artwork. A sandstone tablet was found on Monks Mound, which showed a man wearing a hawk shaped mask and feathered cape. This tablet now named the Birdman Tablet is located in the Interpretive Center.
