Discover
the Azores Islands
The
archipelago of
the Azores is
located in the
Atlantic Ocean and
extends in a southeast to
northwest arch that
covers 600 km (372 miles). It
is made up
of nine islands clustered
into three groups:
the Eastern group
(São Miguel and Santa Maria),
the Central group (Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico
and Faial), and the
Western Group (Corvo and
Flores).
The
islands occupy a
privileged spot where
geography and history come
together in harmony;
thus, a trip to Pico, the
tallest island in
the chain at
an altitude of 2,352 m, (7,716 ft.) is a
must. The eastern-most
island is Santa Maria, at about 1,460 km
(907 mi.) from the European
coastline, whereas the
western-most is the
Island of Flores, situated 3,750 km (2,330 mi.) from North
America.
The
volcanic origin
of the Azores
can be seen
in the number
of volcanic cones, craters and
other features throughout the
islands.
The
land area of each
island varies, with the
largest one, São Miguel, measuring 747 km2 (288 mi2) and Corvo, the
smallest, only 17 km2 (6.5 m2). |

O
Arquipélago dos Açores está situado no Oceano Atlântico e
estende-se ao longo de uma faixa de 600 km, orientada no sentido
Sudoeste-Noroeste. É constituído por
nove ilhas que constituem três grupos, o Oriental (S. Miguel e
Sta. Maria), o Central (Terceira,
Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico e Faial) e o Ocidental (Corvo e
Flores).
Num
lugar privilegiado, onde a geografia e a história convivem de forma
harmoniosa, não pode deixar de visitar a ilha do Pico – o ponto
mais alto do arquipélago – com uma altitude de 2 352 m. A ilha mais
oriental é a ilha de Sta. Maria situada
a cerca de 1,460 km da costa europeia. A mais ocidental é a ilha de
Flores, e localiza-se a 3.750 km da América do Norte.
A
origem vulcânica de todo o arquipélago revela-se pelos cones
vulcânicos e crateras. A superfície individual de cada ilha varia
entre 747 km2 (S. Miguel) e 17 km2 (Corvo). |

Festivities
Here
we propose a tourist route
that takes
you to the
traditional festivities on some
of the
islands.
The
popular
“saint day
festivals” (festas populares)
that take
place throughout the
archipelago of the
Azores are a testament to the
deep religious faith
of the people.
From
the traditional
feast day of
the Divine Holy
Spirit (Divino Espírito Santo)
that takes places
in all the
boroughs of the
island to the feast
day of the
Holy Lord Christ
the Miracle-Worker (Senhor Santo Cristo dos
Milagres) held on the
island of São Miguel on
the fifth Sunday
after Easter, there
is no lack of
events anywhere in
the Azores from
May to September.
Around
the time of St.
John’s Day on
the 24th of June,
the famous festivities take
over the island
of Terceira. One of
the most beloved
“saints of the
people” (santos populares)
is St. John (São
João), and St. John’s
Day celebrations begin on a
Friday and conclude
on the Sunday
of the following
week, totalling 10 days. Decorated
floats, theatre and
music performances, parades, marching
bands, bull fighting
and fireworks are all
on tap for the
event.
Other
notable festivities
in and among
the islands include
the August Tide (Maré
de Agosto) Festival in Santa
Maria, the Week of
the Sea (Semana do Mar) in Faial, the
week of the
Whalers (Semana dos Baleeiros)
in Pico and the
Emigrant Festival in Flores.
On
the Island of São Miguel

Day of the Holy
Lord Christ (Senhor Santo Cristo) in Ponta Delgada – Takes place
on the fifth
Sunday after Easter.
Feast
Days dedicated to
the Holy Spirit –

the Workers’ Procession – in
Vila Franca do Campo – Takes

"As Festas das Ilhas"
Propomos
um Roteiro sobre as Festas que ocorrem em todas as
Ilhas.
As
festas populares que se realizam em todo o arquipélago dos Açores
são o reflexo da religiosidade do povo açoriano. Desde as
tradicionais festas do Divino Espírito Santo, que se realizam em
todas as freguesias da ilha, de Maio a Setembro até à festa do
Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, na ilha de São Miguel, realizada
anualmente, no quinto Domingo após a Páscoa.
Por
altura do São João, a 24 de Junho, realizam-se na ilha Terceira as
famosas festas Sanjoaninas, ligadas às
tradições dos Santos Populares, iniciando-se numa sexta-feira e
terminando no Domingo da semana seguinte (10 dias), com cortejos
etnográficos, espectáculos de teatro e música, desfiles de marchas
e filarmónicas, actuação de grupos folclóricos, jogos, competições
desportivas, touradas à corda, touradas de praça e fogo de
artifício.
Outras
grandes festas, espalhadas um pouco por todo o arquipélago,
nomeadamente a Maré de Agosto em Santa Maria, a Semana do Mar no
Faial, a Semana dos Baleeiros no Pico ou a Festa do Emigrante nas
Flores.

Festas
do Senhor Santo Cristo em Ponta Delgada – Realizam-se no quinto
domingo após a Páscoa.
Festas
do Espírito Santo – Em toda a Ilha – realizam-se de Abril a Junho,
aos Domingos.

Miguel
Gates
of the
City (Portas da Cidade)
The
Gates
of the
City, three
imposing arches built
in the 18th
century, are truly the
landmark of note in Ponta
Delgada.
The
Praça
de Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square,
where the
Gates are located, is considered
the heart
of the
city.
The
pavement designs you
see are made up
of black basalt
stones from the
Azores and white
marble coming from
Portugal, on the continent.
Lagoon
of the Seven Cities (Lagoa das
Sete Cidades)
Located
in the volcanic craters
that form
the island,
the Lagoon
of the
Seven Cities is
one of the
most breath-taking landscapes in
the entire archipelago.
Terra
Nostra Park
(Parque Terra Nostra)
One
of the largest gardens
in the
Azores, the
Terra Nostra Park owes
is creation to Tomaz
Hickling, the American
vice-consul who arrived
in São Miguel in 1769.
Throughout
the 12.5 hectares of Terra
Nostra Park, you
may observe a wide and
rich variety of
plant species coming
from all over
the world, as well as
certain examples of
wildflowers from the
Azores. |

Portas
da Cidade
As
Portas da Cidade são um verdadeiro ex-líbris de Ponta Delgada com os seus três
imponentes arcos construídos no séc.XVIII.
A
Praça de Gonçalo Velho Cabral onde se situam as Portas da Cidade, é
considerada o Coração da Cidade.
Os
desenhos no pavimento são compostos por pedras negras (basalto) dos
Açores e pedra branca (mármore) do Continente Português.
Lagoa
das Sete Cidades
Situadas
nas crateras vulcânicas que formam a ilha, a lagoa das Sete Cidades
é um dos elementos paisagísticos mais marcantes de todo o
arquipélago.
Parque
Terra Nostra
Um
dos maiores jardins açorianos, o Parque Terra Nostra deve a sua construção à iniciativa de
Tomaz Hickling, vice-consul
americano que chegou a S. Miguel em 1769.
No
"Parque Terra Nostra", com 12,5
hectares de superfície, pode observar não só, uma variedade muito
rica de espécies provenientes dos quatro cantos do mundo, mas
também um espaço onde se encontram alguns exemplares da flora
primitiva dos Açores. |

THE
CACHE
Most
geocaches in São Miguel
island are micro, and some are virtual, so it’s
difficult to drop any
Travel Bugs here.
With that in
mind i created
this one, close to
the airport. The
container is not
very large, but
can be changed
if necessary.
The
cache is hidden in
walking distance (around
500 meters) from the
airport, under some stones, on
the curve of the
access road to the
airport.
I
suggest you
park your
car at
the airport
parking and
walk to the
cache, as stoping the
car close to the
geocache might look
suspicious.

CACHE
A
maioria das caches na ilha de São
Miguel são micro, outras são virtuais, pelo que é difícil largar
Travel Bugs. Por isso criei esta geocache, perto do Aeroporto. O container não é muito grande mas pode ser trocado
se necessário.
A
geocache está escondida a poucos passos
do Aeroporto (cerca de 500 m.), debaixo de algumas pedras, na curva
da estrada de acesso ao Aeroporto.
Sugiro
que estacione o carro no parque de estacionamento do aeroporto e
caminhe até à cache, pois parar o carro
perto dela pode parecer suspeito.
