At about 3:00 on the afternoon of Saturday, July 14, 2007, Mockba was driving down Big Cottonwood Canyon with his daughter Danielle and his dogs Jasmine and Max when he overcorrected, spun out, and smashed into the trees on the south side of the road.
Mockba got out of the car, took two steps, and realized immediately that he'd better sit down. X-rays would later reveal that his left fibula was cracked and that his left tibia was broken in half.
Max got out of the car, took two steps, and collapsed to the ground, to all appearances dead. Fortunately, Mockba later discovered that Max was merely playing dead, albeit very convincingly.
Jasmine got out of the car, took two steps, and then disappeared down the canyon as fast as she could go. The investigating deputy would later follow Mockba to the hospital and cite him for having dogs loose in the watershed.
Danielle got out of the car, took two steps, and realized that although she was shaken up, she was uninjured. She was the only person on the accident scene able to get phone reception.
The first stage of the cache is hidden in one of the trees into which Mockba's car crashed. If you look carefully, you'll find shattered Subaru pieces scattered about the ground. Sort of a first-to-find bonus!
Mockba's family and friends began searching for Jasmine almost immediately. Mockba himself returned from the hospital to the search area to try to help. The search parties posted flyers and combed the surrounding area until 2:00 a.m. with no luck.
The search resumed at 6:30 Sunday morning. At about 1:00 that afternoon, Mockba's children were at a boulder in the middle of a gravel clearing calling Jasmine's name. Suddenly, Jasmine splashed across Big Cottonwood Creek to rejoin them.
The final stage is in a grove of trees north of Reunion Rock.
Mockba's leg has healed and he is back to his old tricks. The charge for having dogs loose in the watershed was dropped.
Congratulations to Fire Elemental for being first to find.
