A nice fun cache while you visit Lake Cleveland
Growing up I came to Lake Cleveland a lot. I was always told it was the crater of an extinct volcano. I thought that was pretty cool. It wasn't until I was doing my graduate work in geology that I realized these mountains were not volcanic. In fact they are formed from metamorphic sandstones (quartzites) which once resided at the bottom of a sea. Eons of uplift later we have these magnificent, 10,000 foot mountains. So why the lake? Turns out that Lake Cleveland is actually a glacial lake. As you stand at this cache site and look down at the lake, the far end of the lake is the terminal morraine of small alpine glacier that formed here during the last ice age. Behind you is the valley the glacier descended through and above that is the large flat regions where the snow collected. Had you been standing in this spot several thousand years ago you would have gotten run over by the edge of the glacier.
In the meantime, enjoy a moderately easy cache, some steep climbing, but good trail, should be accessible to most, in a very nice location. Bring a lunch and enjoy the lake. There are several other caches in this canyon. It would take a dedicated cacher all day to get them all. Sounds like a plan. Happy Hunting.
