Something you wouldn't expect to find on top of a mountain.
I came up the mountain today to perform some cache maintenance on This Cache is Mine and Peace Point Six, but mainly to complete the great J5Crew series Mountaintops of Marin. It was so beautiful I spent the day up here exploring some areas I hadn't been to in many years. Came upon this strange place and decided to place a cache. This area is not accessible after sunset.
The Mill Valley Air Force Station was built between 1950 and 1952 and dedicated in 1953 to serve as the central command post for all the Bay Area Nike-Ajax and later nuclear-capable Nike-Hercules anti-aircraft missile sites. It consisted of 62 buildings, including a bowling alley, theater, swimming pool, and tennis courts. When the major threat changed from bombers to ICBM's, the missiles were no longer a deterrent. The base was declared excess in 1982 and was transferred to the National Park Service in 1983.
It's a 35mm film cannister with just a log, so bring a pen. It cannot be seen except from exactly the right angle. A handy retrieval tool is nearby.
