Geocache Description:

Humble Beginnings – Oakville

Welcome to a historical tour of Oakville. This is a 5-stage multi with the final being the usual camouflaged lock-n-lock.

Stage 1
Look for the panel on the information kiosk that tells you when the Bronte Harbour Company was founded. Divide this number by 1000 and add it to N43 24.698 and W079 38.133. While you’re here you might want to visit a nearby cache. You can also check out the Fisherman’s Memorial recently unveiled.

Stage 2
This stage is near Erchless Estate which was built by William Chisholm the founder of Oakville. It began as the customs house and was built upon to provide a home for his family and was named after a castle in Scotland. While you’re here you can take a tour of Erchless Estate or visit the Oakville Historical Society.
Take the letter found on the cache which will tell you which of the following co-ordinates to use to find the next cache.
A= N43 25.633 W079 41.266
B= N43 26.418 W079 40.094
C= N43 26.686 W079 39.850
D= N43 26.812 W079 39,801
E= N43 27.018 W079 40.178
F= N43 26.759 W079 40.248
G= N43 26.677 W079 40.263
H= N43 26.843 W079 40.125

Stage 3
Take a look down on the flat lands by the west bank of the creek. This land was used by the Mississauga First Nations People to grow corn. To reach their camp they would cross the creek by canoe and follow a trail on the near side of the creek to south to the lake shore where they had established a summer camp. The co-ordinates for the next cache will be on this cache.

Stage 4
Look for a three digit number. While you’re looking at the number look ahead and slightly to your right, you will see King’s Castle. This castle was built by William Mackenzie King in 1858 and originally called “Solitude”. William became an orphan in 1817 when he was six years old and became a ward of his uncle William Chisholm. In 1859 he sold “Solitude” to his cousin Robert K. Chisholm who later sold it to his brother Thomas C. Chisholm. William Mackenzie King died in 1879 penniless. Kings Castle was the first private building in Oakville to be designated a historic building under the Ontario Heritage Act. Take the number you have found, divide by 1000 and add to N43 26.771 W079 41.187.

Stage 5
You’ve finally reached the final stage. Take a look around while you’re searching. You might see some familiar names.
