Brief History of St. John Berchman's Church in Jocko

On August 4, 1880, St. John Berchman's Nussuib Chapel at Jocko MT. was dedicated by Bishop Blondell. The frame structure, 28 feet by 75 feet had been started in 1882 at the expense of the US Govt. to fulfill its treaty with the Salish people wo had been displaced from thier land in the Bitteroot, where Stevensville is today, and forced by the US Govt. to come to the Jocko Valley. It was built on the original Indian Agency land in the Jocko and was staffed by teh Jesuit Priests from St. Ignatuis Mission.

The original church was destroyed by fire on December 11, 1960 and was replaced a little later by the former Chapel from teh Jesuit boys school in St. Ignatius. This church which is itself over a hundred years old still stands on this land, along with the Indain cemetary for the Salish pople and others. Mass continues to be celebrated there on Sundays at 5 pm (4pm in the winter)

When visiting this cache notice the old yellow home. This was home to the US Govt offical, Mr. Ronan, the Superintendent of the agency.
