Geocache Description:

Chepiwanoxet means "Devil's Island" - although this area would more aptly be described as a peninsula!

The cache is located in the Chepiwanoxet Wildlife Preserve and Park. This small peninsula affords a great view of Greenwich Bay. You can very clearly see Greenwich Cove, Goddard Park, Buttonwoods, Apponaug and several marinas.

A small parking area is located at the bottom of Alger Avenue.

This is a neat little place off the beaten path and probably overlooked by most.

Take note of how close you are to the Goddard Park caches! You could watch geocachers searching from Chepiwanoxet Point!

reveritt did a bit of research on this spot, and found that it was purchased by Mr. Dutee Arnold, a wealthy local landowner, in 1868. Arnold opened it to the public as a park, which is how it was used until Arnold's death in the 1880s. In the early 20th century, the land was sold Edson Gallaudet, the second licensed pilot in the US, who built an aircraft factory.

A RI CRMC document that he found on line said "Warwick’s decision to buy 10 acres of property on Chepiwanoxet Point for $485,000 in 1994 not only saved valuable open space on the bay for public benefit, it also preserved the site of the Gallaudet Aircraft Corporation, one of the country’s first aircraft factories and precursor to behemoth defense contractor General Dynamics. Known for its mass-produced, World War I-era Curtiss floatplanes, and for a seaplane model that once held world speed and climb rate records, the company found its bay home a sheltered place to test and launch aircraft. It would continue its engineering work, although under another name, until a storm surge during the Hurricane of 1938 swept over the peninsula and destroyed the factory."
