Hayrick Butte is located just off highway 20 at the Hoodoo/Big lake exit. I parked at N44.23.883 / W121.51.670 to start the accent.
There is only one way to summit this butte unless you own your own helicopter and that's from the east side. Skwirl dog and I found the best way up for us and left this cache just over the lip of the cliff to show the way.
It's a rough climb and somewhat dangerous but I know you can do it. Be very careful or you'll be shale surfing a couple hundred feet down with a not so soft landing.
Of course there great views from the top. It's alright to complain about the climb, just remember I had two loaded ammo cans on my back as well as a couple liters of Skwirl water.
This cache has great bragging rights. Every time you drive the Santiam pass you can look over and say "I've been up there".
For details on how this feature was formed check out Kestrel Ridge's log entry on July 25 07.
Continue the half mile across the butte and check out the other cache "Sky Island".
