Cache naast historische brug / Cache next to historic bridge

Peertil is een historische plek in het Groningse landschap. Til betekent brug. Peer komt van Peerd – Paard dat door de samenvoeging met til z’n d heeft verloren. Het bruggetje is gebouwd ten behoeve van de trekvaart. Hier konden de paarden oversteken. Deze brug stamt uit 1666 en is onlangs gerestaureerd, met Europese subsidie ten behoeve van een toeristisch fietspad dat Stedum met Ten Boer verbindt.

Boven op het bruggetje "Peertil" is een afsluiting - een hekwerkpoortje - met daarin een afbeelding van een paard. Peertil bevindt zich op de splitsing van de Westerwijtwerdermaar en de Stedumermaar ten zuiden van Stedum. Afhankelijk van welke kant de schipper op wilde gaan met z'n trekschuit moest het paard aan de ene of de andere kant van het water zijn.
 Peertil is a historic place in the countryside of Groningen. Til is an old local dialect word for a bridge. Peer originates from the Dutch word for horse, paard or peerd in dialect. The bridge is built for when these waters were the main means of transport. This was the place for horses to cross the water. The bridge was built in 1666 and is recentely restored with European funds, and serves now as a dedicate bike path connecting Ten Boer with Stedum.

On the top of the bridge we find a gate with in metal an image of an horse. Peertil is very close to a junction in the waterways, where the Westerwijtwerdermaar and the Stedumermaar are joining together. If the captain of the horse drawn vessel had to choose here which way he wanted to go and needed to place his horse on one or on the other side of the water based on his desired direction.


Op de brug kunt u tevens de Groningse polders zien. Het Groningse landschap was vroeger moeilijk te begaan en de doorgaande routes waren meestal waterwegen, met boten getrokken door paarden. Gaat u vanuit Peertil door naar Ten Boer, of komt u daarvandaan dan komt u langs het gemaal Hemert dat tegenwoordig het waterpeil op niveau houdt.

U kunt niet zo dichtbij parkeren, maar er is een picknick plaats vlak bij de brug.
Zelf een pen meenemen!		 On top of the bridge you have a nice view into the Groningen polders. In the old days the Netherlands was hard to travel and the main means of transport were horse drawn vessels. If you come from the direction of Ten Boer or if you're leaving in that direction you will see a modern pumping station, keeping the water at the desired level for the polders.

Parking is not available in the vicinity, but there is a nice place for a picknick.
